Day 0

We have established base camp at the Tunacan Hotel in Ovacik, about 5km south of Fethiye.  The Tunacan is ideally positioned, as it is only 2km from the start of the Lycian Way and there are a bunch of kebab shops across the road.

We could have started the walk today, but I managed to wrangle an extra rest day by saying that I needed to start a blog.  I had previously said that I would never write a blog. This is it.

I feel that the team is coming into the peak of physical condition.  I have a dodgy knee that I gained during our one and only training walk (three days in the Ruahines), while Fiona hurt her back this morning swimming in the hotel pool.  Everything seems to be coming together nicely.

Last night we picked up the last of the supplies / gear that we need for the trip; toilet paper.  This means that excluding food and water, I will be carrying about 13kg, and Fiona about 9kg.  I know that there may be gear freaks reading this that are looking forward to some gear reviews / endorsements.  All I can say at this stage is that it's some unknown Turkish brand, off-white in colour, basic roll form, and it looks pretty heavy duty.  I'll write a decent review after it has undergone some field testing.

Below is a photo of my kit (excluding pack) for anyone who really hasn't got anything better to look at on the internet.  There should be a phone in there as well, but I used it to take the photo. No - I'm not taking coke; I just needed another bottle to carry water. Note that I'm not sponsored by any of these suppliers.  If a toilet paper manufacturer reads this and does wish to sponsor me then my minimum bribe level is six rolls.

Internet coverage will be a sporadic after we start the walk, but I will update this blog when I can.
